Founder and firm updates
In 2024, Dr Rosemary Listing was appointed a Sessional Lecturer in Health Law at the University of Newcastle, teaching the postgraduate health law course at Newcastle Law School.
In Semester 1 of 2024, Dr Rosemary Listing joined Newcastle Law School as a Sessional Lecturer in the postgraduate course LAWS6090 Health Law. She led the weekly seminars, guiding law students through the areas of health law that sit at the centre of her own practice.
It is a role that reflects both her doctorate in medical negligence and her day to day work for patients. Teaching the law she practises keeps her at the front edge of it, and it gives the next generation of lawyers the benefit of experience drawn from real cases.
About the course
LAWS6090 Health Law is an advanced course for postgraduate and honours law students at the University of Newcastle. It runs on a lecture and seminar model. Students work through video lectures and readings each week, and then explore the material in far greater depth in the seminars that Dr Listing led. The seminars set problem based exercises and discussion, so that students learn to apply the law rather than simply recite it.
What the course covers
The syllabus spans the full landscape of health law, much of it the same terrain as Dr Listing’s practice. It includes:
- ✓Principles of healthcare law and ethics
- ✓Autonomy, informed consent, and the right to refuse treatment
- ✓Medical negligence and patient safety
- ✓Mental health laws
- ✓Healthcare decisions for children and young people
- ✓Health information, patient privacy, and Medicare
- ✓Pregnancy and the law, including reproductive technologies and abortion care
- ✓Genetics and research involving human participants
- ✓Public health law and pandemics
- ✓End of life care and the right to dignity in death
Dr Listing’s seminars drew most closely on the areas she knows best in practice, including medical negligence, consent, and patient safety.
Why it matters
An academic appointment of this kind reflects a depth of expertise that is recognised beyond the courtroom. It also reflects something Dr Listing values, a commitment to teaching, to clear thinking about difficult questions, and to the students who will carry health law forward. For her clients, it means their matters are handled by someone who does not only practise health law, but teaches it.
