What the complaint concerned
The Commission prosecuted a complaint against Ms Stevens before the Tribunal. According to the release, the complaint related to her conduct towards a patient between 2021 and 2023, while she was working at Murrumbateman.
What the Tribunal found
The release states that the Tribunal found the following elements of the complaint proven. Ms Stevens:
- touched the patient during consultations;
- became emotional and tearful while discussing her own personal problems with him in therapy sessions;
- suggested they meet outside therapy sessions, including for overnight stays;
- sent him flirtatious and sexually suggestive text messages, including photographs of herself; and
- contacted him after he ended the therapeutic relationship, seeking an explanation and a meeting for "closure".
The Tribunal also found proven that Ms Stevens did not seek appropriate professional consultation, or refer the patient to another practitioner, when she became aware that transference issues were arising and an inappropriate emotional relationship was developing, and when she had formed the view that treatment was no longer benefiting him.
Orders
The Tribunal found Ms Stevens guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct and professional misconduct. It cancelled her registration as a psychologist, with a non-review period of two years.
